About This Spot

Nestled along a quiet pedestrian street in the heart of Praia, Restaurante José da Rosa invites you into a tranquil world where fresh flavors and heartfelt hospitality shape the experience. As you step through its doors, a sense of calm unfolds—the easy pace, the soft chatter of neighbors and visitors, and the gentle strum of live music create a space that feels both familiar and alive, marked by a warm, unhurried rhythm.

This is not a place bound by rigid menus or conventions. The day’s selection is like a quietly spoken secret, shared by the chef himself—a Portuguese soul who seamlessly blends local Cape Verdean freshness with thoughtful culinary touches. Each visit feels like a personal discovery: the local catch of the day thoughtfully explained, the choices shaped by the ingredients closest to hand and the moment’s inspiration.

Gathered around simple tables beneath open skies or soft awnings, diners find themselves drawn into an intimate setting where food is a conversation, not just sustenance. The fish arrives on platters reflecting the ocean’s generosity, while meat selections offer understated richness, often revealing surprising textures and flavors that linger long after the meal ends. The warmth of the staff, though naturally stretched at busy times, never feels diminished—there’s an evident sincerity in their attentiveness that quietly enriches the evening.

As dusk falls, the small stage comes alive, blending local rhythms with the softly fading light, weaving an ambiance that’s both relaxed and compelling. Here, the pleasures of place, palette, and human connection converge—making every visit to Restaurante José da Rosa feel less like dining out and more like joining a cherished gathering in a corner of Cape Verde.

We are so lucky to find a nice restaurant with excellent fish dishes. They have no printed menu but they wrote the fresh fish dishes on the display blackboard. The chef( probably the owner) who is a Portuguese explained the menu to us in details. We asked him to recommend the fish that we should order and surprisingly, he made us a platter with three kind of fresh and delicious fish. They are Tuna, Bonita and Serra. All three kinds of fish taste so well. The side dishes of salad of fried rice are also exceptional. The chef and the staff are very nice. Overall a very satisfied dining experience.

We found this by luck, as our hotel was nearby amd most places were closed on Sunday. Friendly and relaxed staff, nice atmospheare with live music for desert. They don't seem to have a fixed menu, it seems all to be fresh food for the day with the dishes written on a blackboard.

Very delicious food. A small menu written on a board with a few fish dishes on one side, and a few meat on the other. We got two types of fish and loved both. Lots of outdoor seating on a very pedestrian street, and a tiny stage for local musicians which set a lovely atmosphere. The staff seemed a bit overloaded by the number of guests, but they were always super friendly so not truly something to complain about.

This might be the best restaurant in Santiago. It has the best cheff and best kitchen we tried. And we have been in a lot of good restaurants in this island. This is the best so far. Fresh fish not overcooked (difficult to find in this island) Expect turistic prices, but the price for what you get is incredibly good. Fresh fish, fresh seafood (we tried percebes for the first time). The food is 10/10. The service super good too. We arrived early and the cheff was outside and gave us good advices. Super recomended. Service also good. And live music (on a Friday night). I don't review unless I am super convinced a place is good or not. Give it a try. You won't be disapointed.

on Vegan request, they prepared a very delicious rice dish, with all kind of vegetables. The staff is very pleasant and every evening there is semi-acoustic Live Music.
